Newell’s Old Boys advanced to the round of 16 of the Argentine Cup this Thursday, defeating the newly promoted Deportivo Riestra 1-0, in Paraná. The match was marked by two events, one historic and one embarrassing.
The first was the debut of the youngest player in a first division team in Argentina. This is Mateo Apolonio, a left back for Deportivo Riestra who stepped onto the field at just 14 years and 29 days old. He entered the field in the 85th minute.
Apolonio, according to the newspaper La Nación, broke the record held by Hugo Aicardi, Racing goalkeeper, who played at the age of 14 years and 353 days in a match that his team lost 10-0 against Rosario Central, on August 14, 1975. His debut occurred in the middle of a strike by professional soccer players in Argentina.
It should be remembered that the record in Colombian soccer is held by John Jairo Mosquera, a forward who debuted with the Millonarios shirt at 14 years and 289 days. It was on October 30, 2002, in a match between the blues and Atlético Huila. Mosquera retired in 2022 and his last team was Sporting Cristal, from Peru.
The fight began due to a strong infraction by Ignacio Schor, a Newell’s player, who deserved a warning. The young Apolonio was allegedly hit and that sparked the anger among the Riestra players.
“I don’t know what happened because when the game ended I went to the locker room, but violence has to be outside of football. I didn’t see the guy doing anything, he is very polite and professional”, Fabbiani noted.
For his part, Newell’s coach, Mauricio Larriera, explained: “On the one hand, as a father, I say ‘what a danger’, but I don’t want to question anything, but especially in the Argentine Cup, which tend to be more aggressive matches, they can be more dangerous. “I don’t know if the boy received any blows or not, but I hope nothing happened to him.”
