Electric cars are deemed to be clean, and those who buy them have the impression of making a gesture for the planet, all the more interesting as their bill is considerably reduced thanks to the bonuses paid by the State and local communities. But are electric cars really virtuous?
No fuel, zero grams of CO2 emitted: that’s for sure, but an electric car emits, when it is produced and even before being driven, twice as much greenhouse gas as a thermal vehicle. Explanations.
Water and air pollution? Resource depletion ?
At the heart of any electric vehicle, metals extracted from all over the world: more than 60 kilos of metals for each battery, not to mention the 80 to 90 kilos of copper required for the electrification and connections of each vehicle, and the aluminum to build lighter bodies. An electric car therefore represents hundreds of kilos of metals that must be extracted from the subsoil, an operation that is expensive in CO2, emits pollutants discharged into the air or water, and very greedy in water. ..
And where does the electricity it consumes come from? Globally, this mainly concerns electricity produced by coal-fired power stations and, in France, nuclear power stations …
