Daniel Muñoz returns to the Colombian National Team for the double date of the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in North America. Consolidated in Néstor Lorenzo’s team and also in Crystal Palace, the winger is, on paper, one of the fixed pieces to face Bolivia, on October 10 in El Alto, and Chile, five days later in Barranquilla.
According to the criteria of
Muñoz wants revenge after what happened to him in the Copa América, when he missed the final after being sent off against Uruguay in the semifinal. That day Santiago Arias replaced him.
Now, the Antioquian hopes that Colombia will quickly secure a place for the World Cup. But his sights are set much, much higher.
“We wanted to reach an end. It was achieved. Due to football circumstances, it was not won. Now we are focused on our World Cup qualification. We know that in these four remaining dates, October and November, if we do things well, we can ensure it,” declared Muñoz, in an interview with ESPN.
Muñoz sets longer goals. Colombia wants to surpass its best performance in a World Cup, that of Brazil 2014, when it reached the quarterfinals. But the defender wants much more.
“If you ask me, we all dream of what, and I can tell you now with complete certainty and security, that we are going to work and fight because we are going to reach that World Cup final,” he insisted.
Friendly fire: Daniel Muñoz and Luis Díaz face each other again
Now, Muñoz is getting ready for a match with friendly fire: he will face his teammate in the National Team and one of the team’s leaders, Luis Díaz, in the match that Crystal Palace and Liverpool will play this Saturday (6:30 am) .
“This is the Premier League, and we know that here at any moment they will turn around. It is an important, beautiful duel, Liverpool is coming, everyone knows the friendship, that brotherhood that I have with Luis,” he added.
“I always like to face the best and I consider him one of the best in the world, so he challenges me to be much better than him, I like to mark him”he added.
It will be the second time that Muñoz and Díaz face each other in the Premier League. On April 14, Crystal Palace won 0-1 at Anfield. The full-back played the entire game and the guajiro was replaced by Diogo Jota in the 66th minute.
