The closest most people ever came to Mario Kart playing in real life was throwing a banana peel out the car window. However, there are some experiences that come fairly close. For example, a go-kart track in Missouri went viral five years ago, but that turned out to be quite a drab affair. You could also enter Mario-Karting costumes through Tokyo, but that is now banned.
Then you have Crazy Karts in Utrecht. But BattleKart comes closest to a game Mario Karten in real life. BattleKarts are electric karts that allow you to drive over power-ups and fire things to thwart your opponents. Incidentally, you will not encounter any literal references to the well-known kart game. They are not so keen on that at Nintendo.
How does BattleKart work?
In this game you sit in a real kart, which actually drives. Projectors hang from the ceiling that plot a trajectory and project the power-ups onto the road. On a screen you can see which power-ups you have and if you press a button on the steering wheel, you can actually see them flying. In addition to racing, there are other play modes, such as football and snake.
Looking at the video like this, we don’t think the karts are going very fast, but it all looks entertaining. You will unfortunately not find BattleKart in the Netherlands yet, but you can find it in Belgium, Germany and France.
