In the midst of the numerous emotions that this 2021 world championship has given to Formula 1 fans, one of the strongest sensations was felt in revising the surname Schumacher officially on the starting grid, for the first time since 2013. After Michael’s long and successful experience that ended in that year – the same year in which, in December, he fell into a coma after a fall on skis – the Haas he promoted his son to the team Mick, in turn fresh from success in Formula 2 in 2020.
Among the drivers most affected by the 22-year-old’s leap in quality, he could not miss Sebastian Vettel, which has always had the Kaiser as a real point of reference. However, thanks above all to a scarcely competitive single-seater, Schumacher’s first season in Formula 1 will certainly not be remembered by the young German as the simplest of his career, quite the contrary. Almost always sentenced to the last row in qualifying, he still managed to carry his Haas during the championship twice in Q2 – in France and Turkey – without ever finishing in the top 10 in the race.
Performances that convinced the public opinion on the real qualities of Schumacher junior, who in most cases seemed very often faster than Nikita Mazepin’s other Haas and unable to express his full potential due to the obvious limitations of the car: “I can say he did well with the worst car – commented Vettel in an interview with Blick – and he also solved the main task of beating his teammate with class. There is still a lot to learn in the first year, but it will be difficult to continue this growth process without a more competitive car. For this, I wish him a better car for 2022, which can do justice to his talent“. Regarding the numerous accidents that have seen him as a protagonist, Vettel stressed that it is a dynamic to be taken into account for a rookie: “It’s normal, in the first year there is always something to learn”.
