The next Formula 1 world championship will face a disruption of the technical regulations, generally considered the first step towards one gradual revolution of this sport ready to take place with the passing of the seasons. In addition to 2022, in fact, the Circus has already set further objectives for 2026, mainly characterized by the use of 100% eco-sustainable synthetic fuels. Yet, within the same F1, there is a driver who has launched a decisive appeal to the same category: a warning that is anything but reassuring.
In fact, in recent years Sebastian Vettel has made a lot of talk about itself for its attention to climate change, as well as highlighting various social and environmental problems with concrete actions and initiatives. The Aston Martin standard bearer, interviewed by Tages-Anzeiger, criticized various aspects related to the organization and management of the Circus, starting with drafting of calendars. On this issue, the German expressed his opinion as follows: “Financial interests – commented the 34-year-old – they should not be the top priority in calendar planning. We shouldn’t be flying east to west or north to south, but where it is closest. Even the ban on plastics in the stands and in the paddock it can make a big difference. Of course, neither would save the world, but if Formula 1 doesn’t adapt to global developments, challenges and problems, takes the risk of being outdated or even of disappear in the next ten years, even if the public is growing “.
While acknowledging the implementation of several changes from 2007 to today, i.e. from the year of his debut, the four-time world champion believes that this is not enough, rejecting the accusation that he has only recently supported certain issues: “The weather it passes, but paradoxically in Formula 1 it seems to have stopped – he added – our sport is fast and progressive, as well as in technology and related innovations. When it comes to ideas, however, we’re not exactly pioneers. I didn’t have to switch teams to learn it, but I think I’ve just aged. Even as a parent, your views and opinions change. Also, I am naturally curious and open to other opinions. Change is often associated with the fear that something positive will disappear and I have noticed that people in F1 don’t always see change as an opportunity for the future. Externally, Formula 1 always wants to appear open in its communication. But to be honest, I wonder if there is the same courage inside “.
In conclusion, Vettel finally expressed his total esteem for the activist Greta Thunberg, praising the battles waged by the young Swede: “She is a true role model for the whole world – He admitted – and older men should listen to it more. We are currently burning fossil fuels, so we are more exposed to this debate than other sports. But I believe that all politicians, industries, companies or individuals also have a great responsibility towards society. Formula 1 must change too, there is no other way ”.
