Ukraine has one of the highest rates of rabies in Europe
The College of Veterinarians of the Region of Murcia offers free rabies vaccine, internal (Echinococcus multilocularis) and external deworming, identification by microchip, if not carried and the EU passport, for all pets that come with Ukrainian refugees, thanks to the protocol agreed between the collegiate entity and the General Directorate of Livestock, Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.
In this way, the veterinarians and the Autonomous Administration comply with the “flexibility” measures adopted by the European Union to facilitate the movement of refugees who flee with their pets from the Russian war against Ukraine without the need to previously request a permit. individual as it is not a member state of the European Union, after the European Commission has urged its countries to relax the usual measures to make it easier for displaced people to take their animals with them without difficulties.
The high incidence of rabies in Ukrainian territory has made all administrations adopt measures in which veterinarians “have a very important role to play,” they indicated from the College of Veterinarians of the Region of Murcia.
For this reason and, before the arrival of refugee pets due to the war in Ukraine, the General Directorate of Livestock, Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia has established an action procedure to which Europa Press has had access.
In this protocol, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, through the General Directorate of Livestock, Fisheries and Aquaculture, reported that the municipalities, State Security Forces and Corps, NGOs, social organizations or other groups that are aware of the arrival of Ukrainian citizens to the Region of Murcia and who are accompanied by pets (dogs, cats and ferrets), must communicate this situation through the email ‘[email protected]’, the details of the owner or holder of the animal, full address where is staying, as well as a contact telephone number and email.
In the event of observing, in the clinical assessment, signs compatible with rabies, it will be reported “immediately” to the Animal Health Service and the Food Safety and Zoonosis Service to carry out “control and preventive quarantine” in these cases.
Finally, the Murcian collegiate institution agreed that it “will inform the Administration” of the veterinary clinics closest to the refugees willing to collaborate in this situation. In addition, it will be the veterinarians who bear the economic cost of the material used.
