The next Formula 1 season will start with the great news of the change of staff of the Race Directionat the top of which there will be the presence of two new judges: Eduardo Freitas and Niels Wittichwith the assistance of Herbie Blash. These, at the end of the 2021 world championship, were identified by the FIA as replacements for the Australian Michael Masi, contested several times during the last championship for some decisions judged to be inconsistent and incorrect. The departure of Masi, however, still created a certain displeasure in some pilots, who considered the Federation’s move too abrupt or lacking any understanding for the difficulties of the role.
Among these, also and above all the reigning world champion Max Verstappen, the same one who wanted to send a message to Masi to thank him for the work done in recent years. In fact, the Australian was suddenly promoted to Race Director on the eve of the 2019 World Championship, immediately after the death of Charlie Withing. In an interview with Daily Mailthe Dutch driver also emphasized this aspect, adding other personal considerations on Masi’s work after those already highlighted in recent days.
“It was a difficult task for Michael to replace Charlie quickly – explained the number 1 of Red Bull – everyone needs help. For example, I have the whole team around me. Maybe him he needed more people around, but he never had the opportunity to have them. They really put it underground. I myself have had my moments of confrontation with the stewards, but in the end you have to anyway have respect for each other. It is clear that one cannot always agree with the decisions of others – he concluded – but the main objective is to make racing better, more exciting and, above all, fair ”.
