The weekend of the Miami Grand Prix opened in the worst way for the Red Bull and for Max Verstappen, victim of an authentic sports nightmare in the first two free practice sessions. The reigning world champion, after having limited his presence on the track in PL1 due to some overheating problems in the car, with subsequent replacement of the gearbox following a slight contact against the barriers, saw the situation in PL2 worsen.
Once on the track to make up for the time lost previously, the number 1 had to deal with a hydraulic failure, such as to have generated a small start of fire on his RB18. In this way, therefore, Mad Max he finished the first day of free practice prematurely without having seized the opportunity to run regularly on the new Miami track.
Two sessions therefore to be forgotten both for the Dutchman and for the Red Bull team principal, Christian Hornerwho described what happened to the microphones of Sky Sports equally finding a positive side: “It was a horrible day – commented the British manager – Max had a small problem which convinced us to replace the gearbox, and subsequently had another which unfortunately caused some damage to the rear brakes. We did a total of five timed laps, but thank goodness with the red flags we didn’t waste too much time. In any case, it is still frustrating to lose so much time on the track ”. In this case, PL2 was suspended on two occasions, first for the accident that occurred to Carlos Sainz, and subsequently for the technical problem accused by Nicholas Latifi, who remained stationary on the track.
The Red Bull team principal consoles himself with the work done by Sergio Perez: “He was fast both on the flying lap and on the race pace, we will also use his data for the set-up to be set on Verstappen’s car. Tomorrow we plan to run him a lot in PL3, on these tracks the secret is to become confident and today we have not put him in a position to do so “.
