Verstappen immediately commands Gedda
The free practice of the weekend of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix confirmed the strength of Red Bull and Max Verstappen, who inflicted half a second on his teammate Sergio Perez in PL1, also shaping that last sector in the final stages which previously he had seen him protagonist of some drools (especially in turn-23). In the second free practice, the Dutchman further improved his times and gave another three tenths to his teammate.
Yet it was lousy
The reigning world champion arrived late at the Saudi circuit due to a stomach ache which delayed his landing in Jeddah until this morning. With a joke, Verstappen explained how he would not have missed the second GP of the season for anything in the world: “I have to break two legs and two arms to miss a race“, these are his words to via play. After the close of free practice, Verstappen added: “I think we had a positive day, but I think there are still many things we can improve. In the long run they all seemed quite close to me, but it’s more for tire management, because here they allow you to push. So, with a low-degradation circuit, I think the lap times are all very close, certainly not like in Bahrain“.
Verstappen always among the protagonists in Saudi Arabia
In 2021 the world champion qualified in third place behind the two Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, after an error in the final part of the lap that cost him pole position and ruined a superlative lap. In the race, the Dutchman closed the first Saudi Arabian GP in second place, 21 seconds behind his English rival, with the two who then fought for the world title in the famous Abu Dhabi final, starting on equal points. Verstappen took his revenge in 2022, obtaining the first of 15 victories in the championship here: a success that came by half a second over Charles Leclerc, also in this case after a tight battle.
