Second and (only partially) happy. This seems to be the mood of Max Verstappen at the end of the Sprint Qualifying of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. It is true that with this result the Dutchman brings his points advantage over Lewis Hamilton from 19 to 21 in the world championship standings, but the reasons to smile end here. The Red Bull rider started from the first position on the grid and was easily mocked by the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas, who then went on to win the mini-race, despite Verstappen’s comeback attempt who also had to get rid of Carlos Sainz, who had missed it during the first lap, thanks to the # 33’s difficulties in getting the medium tire up to temperature. Added to this is Hamilton’s insane comeback, who went from 20th to fifth in 14 laps, which certainly doesn’t make the Hasselt native smile.
Interviewed by Sky Sports F1 at the end of the third and final Sprint race of the season, however, Verstappen also agreed to answer one of the questions of the day: his ‘touch’ on the rear wing of the Mercedes in yesterday’s parc fermat, costing him a hefty fine. The World Championship leader explained that at that moment he was not so much interested in the issue of the DRS, which turned out to be crucial for the penalty inflicted on Hamilton, but rather in the issue of rear wing flexibility: the issue raised by Adrian Newey before qualifying. Verstappen did not hesitate to argue that there is still something odd about this.
“We have our suspicions that something is going on there – said the young Red Bull star – at the beginning of the year we all had to change our rear wings with the pillar and the rear. So, I think there is still something ‘going on’ [da parte della Merecedes] with the main floor opening up and giving them more top speed. I was just looking at the rear wing and there is clearly something“. Finally, Mad Max did not spare a single joke about the fine of 50,000 euros inflicted on him by the commissioners: “It’s a heavy fine. Let’s hope they have a nice dinner with lots of expensive wine. They can also invite me to that dinner, I paid for it “, he joked.
