The Dutchman admits that he dislikes the F1 portrayal of the Netflix docuseries: “I understand it serves to increase the popularity of F1. But I don’t want to be part of it “
The heated title battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen is delivering one of the most exciting F1 seasons in recent years. Many are already thinking about how the successful docuseries created by Netflix which for three seasons tells the F1 championship will be reconstructed from Drive to Survive, often fictionalizing the events, but also creating a new audience for the Circus. The tendency to redesign what happens on and off the track, trying to make it more dramatic than it really is, has already made more than one rider turn up their noses, including Verstappen who has announced his retirement from the scene.
Exasperation
–
“I understand that this must be done to increase the popularity of F1 in the United States,” the Dutchman said. But for my part, as a driver, I don’t like being part of it, ”said Verstappen before the US race of F1 2021. The reason? The slightly fictionalized version of events made by Netflix in the first three seasons aired, in particular the exasperation of the rivalry between Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz, then companions in McLaren, which instead does not exactly correspond to reality, so much so that many protagonists of the Circus (primarily McLaren CEO Zak Brown and Red Bull team principal Chris Horner) have criticized the narrative made by Netflix in Drive to Survive 3.
I don’t do dramaturgy
–
“They invented rivalries that don’t really exist. So I decided not to be part of it and I didn’t give an interview anymore because in reality there is nothing to show – in fact, Verstappen explained about it – I’m not really the type to do dramaturgy, I just want facts and real things “.
