Edmundo González thanks the European Parliament for recognizing him as the “legitimate president of Venezuela”
“Thank you,” says the message posted by opposition candidate Edmundo González on his X account, after it became known that the European Parliament had recognized him, this Thursday, as “legitimate president of Venezuela,” at the request of the EPP -or European People’s Party- and the ultra forces.
“I thank the representatives of the European Parliament for the discussion they have decided to have in this House on the serious situation that Venezuela is going through. We Venezuelans want the same thing that Europeans have managed to achieve in our time: to live in freedom and democracy under the rule of law,” says González in a video in which he reads a statement.
The opposition leader especially praised its president, MEP Roberta Metsola, as well as the work of María Corina Machado, from Venezuela, and defined himself as a man “honestly converted into a manager”. In this sense, he indicated that he will work on “as many diplomatic actions and efforts as we can at the highest level to drive solidarity with the Venezuelan democratic cause”.
Regarding his departure from Venezuela, González said that he was forced to flee “due to unspeakable pressures and extreme threats,” and denounced the repression of the Chavista government after the elections of July 28. “The regime, instead of recognizing the desire for change of the Venezuelans, has unleashed a wave of repression: 25 murders, dozens of exiles and more than 2,000 detainees, including children and adolescents, are the result of these last weeks.” However, he clarified that his stay outside Venezuela is temporary, and that he declares himself “willing not to leave unpunished the crimes and violence that have been imposed on us Venezuelans.”
“The official records that prove our victory are available to the entire world,” he stressed, and called on all democracies to speak out. “Europe is the daughter of reason. Act in accordance with the truth and in favour of justice, in full recognition of the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people,” he concluded.
