The general secretary of the PSRM confirms before the Regional Committee of his party that he will present himself to the primaries
The general secretary of the PSRM-PSOE, José Vélez, announced this Thursday to the Regional Committee of the party his intention to present himself to the primaries to be a candidate for the Presidency of the Community in the next regional elections of 2023.
Vélez thus dispelled the doubts that had arisen about his candidacy and the possibility that the Socialists were looking for a revulsion in the face of the poor electoral prospects offered by surveys such as that of the Cemop, in which the PSRM would be left with 14 deputies and without the possibility of mount alternative to PP and Vox.
The primary calendar has to be set by the Federal Committee of the PSOE, but it is expected that both in the Region and in the rest of the autonomous communities they will be held in October. Any militant who meets the endorsements set by the federal leadership will be able to present himself to this internal process, although knowing of the difficulty of competing with the general secretary, who controls the apparatus and, in addition, has the support of Ferraz.
The PSRM leader’s announcement came during the first meeting of the Regional Committee under his mandate, held in Ceutí, a municipality recently reconquered by the socialists after a motion of censure presented together with Ciudadanos. The mayor, Sonia Almela, acted as hostess and thanked the support she had from Vélez and the regional Executive for the operation to remove the popular Juan Felipe Cano from the mayor’s office.
Before the Regional Committee began, Vélez spoke to the media and stated that “it is essential that in 2023 the defectors leave the regional government, Fernando López Miras and the Popular Party, who are to blame for this Region being in a bottomless pit, that this Region is in a dramatic situation, at the head of the main indicators of poverty».
According to Vélez, “there are many Murcian men and women who have a very bad time, but thanks to Pedro Sánchez they can get ahead a little, with the IMV, the ERTES, the housing and rent aid, and the next aid for transport” .
“The change in the Community is going to come in 2023 and people are going to know the difference between being governed by the Popular Party and the PSOE, which is going to manage in an honest, simple and close way,” he said.
