The Brazilian Star Championship will take place from next Friday (9) at the Yacht Club of Santo Amaro, at Represa do Guarapiranga, in São Paulo. This sailing class is the most victorious in the history of Brazil in the Olympics, there are six medals before its departure from the Games program in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
The Brazilian Championship will feature the participation of 15 confirmed pairs. The current champions, Lars Grael (owner of two Olympic bronzes in the Tornardo class) and Guilherme de Almeida will try to win the second title. In 2020, the duo was champion at the Iate Clube in Rio de Janeiro.
“The expectation is for a very balanced championship. For me it’s always been an experience to compete in the Brazilian Nationals”, said Lars Grael, who is looking for the 10th national title and the third consecutive achievement, through the event’s advisor.
Brazil has always been among the best in the world in the Star class, medaling consecutively in the Olympic Games between 1996 and 2012. Even outside the Olympic circuit, the country’s sailors continued to obtain podiums and expressive results abroad.
The Brazilian two-time Olympic champion of the Star class, Torben Grael, will not be present in the regattas of the Brazilian Championship. The Brazilian sports idol is already in Enoshima (Japan) to accompany the Olympic delegation from Brazil.
