Vatican funds spent, Cardinal Becciu on trial for the purchase of a property in London
Cardinal Angelo Becciu was indicted in the context of the financial investments of the Vatican Secretariat of State in London along with nine other people.
At the trial, which will open on July 27, Becciu will have to answer for the crimes of embezzlement and abuse of office also in competition and subornation. Nine months ago, Becciu had been forced to resign as prefect of the Causes of Saints and to renounce the rights of the cardinalate due to the scandal of the management of funds by the Vatican Secretariat of State.
Other defendants include the president and director of the Vatican Financial Supervisory Authority, René Brülhart and Tommaso Di Ruzza, and two intermediaries involved in the purchase of a luxury property with funds from the Vatican Secretariat of State in London, Gianluigi Torzi and Raffaele Mincione, as well as Enrico Crasso, who has been managing the funds of the Secretariat of State for years. Cecilia Marogna, Becciu’s collaborator, will also go to trial on charges of embezzlement. Four companies will also go to trial, three attributable to Crassus and one to Marogna.
The charges against the ten accused include fraud, embezzlement, abuse of office, embezzlement, money laundering and self-laundering, corruption, extortion, publication of documents covered by secrecy, false public deed material and false private deed.
The press release from the Holy See press office states that the investigations into the funds of the Secretariat of State “have made it possible to bring to light a vast network of relations with financial market operators that have generated substantial losses for Vatican finances, having also drawn , destined for the Holy Father’s works of personal charity ”.
