ResumeThe first duel of Giovanni van Bronckhorst as trainer of Rangers has resulted in a victory for the Scots and a European winter. In the group stage of the Europa League, Sparta Prague won 2-0. With the win, Rangers are now secure in second place in Group A.
Van Bronckhorst was appointed last week as the successor to Steven Gerrard who left for Aston Villa. The former player of the club had enjoyed the first few days at his new club, he told BT Sports tonight. “The players have been very positive,” said Van Bronkchorst. “They have worked very hard and look fresh and sharp. It is important to show who we are from the first minute. The audience is our twelfth man. and with a sold out Ibrox behind us the atmosphere can be great and I think that will help our team.”
And Rangers also started the game well. Joe Aribo hit the crossbar after ten minutes from a great distance. After fifteen minutes of play, the first goal followed. James Tavernier played the ball deep to Ianis Hagi, the son of Romanian icon Gheorge Hagi. With a fine action he delivered the ball to Alfredo Morelos, who hit the bottom left corner.
Rangers’ second goal, just after the break, was preceded by an enormous blunder by the Czechs. One of Prague’s defenders decided to defend through the center, completely overlooking Morelos. The Colombian headed in easily: 2-0.
Because leader Olympique Lyon, from trainer Peter Bosz, won 1-3 at Bröndby, Rangers is now certain of second place in the group and therefore wintering in Europe. The Scots previously lost 1-0 at Sparta Prague, but the head-to-head result is now in Rangers favor. With one game to go, Van Bronckhorst’s team has three points more than the Czechs.
