We are tired of the Internet questionnaires that promise to measure the level of satisfaction in sentimental relationships without any foundation. We are not the only ones. Researchers from the University of Stockholm have created the Valentine’s Scale, a metric that reflects the status of a couple through a seven -question questionnaire.
The scale and questionnaire have cognitive-behavioral psychology bases, based on evidence. In interpersonal relationships, this theory argues that satisfaction is intrinsically linked to the interaction of thoughts, behaviors and emotions of both parties. The seven questions, each with four possible answers, evaluate the couple’s problem solving skills, their emotional intimacy and the challenges faced together. The domain of each aspect is key in couple therapies based on cognitive-behavioral theory.
“There are no reliable and valid measures of satisfaction in the relationship. The Valentine’s Scale is a brief measure of satisfaction in the relationship, aimed at providing an easily interpretable index, ”explains the article published in the magazine Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
Once the Valentine’s scale was designed, Stockholm researchers put it to the test. A total of 1,300 participants resolved the questionnaire and then evaluated their relationships more detailed. The results indicated that the questionnaire has a high degree of reliability over time, and that its results are similar to those of other more complex tests that require specialized personnel for their execution.
Those who try the questionnaire should not fear the result. The Valentine’s Scale is a tool for reflection, not a definitive evaluation of the future of the relationship, the study points out. Its objective is to promote open communication and understanding, instead of generating anguish in interested parties.
“If the test result generates concerns, it may be a good idea to talk about what is behind the answers. Relationships are dynamic and are affected by many factors, such as stress, communication difficulties and other circumstances of the Life.
You can access the test for free through the site Valentinskalan. It is available in English, Swedish and Icelandic languages. After performing the test, the site will offer a diagnosis of the level of trust you feel in your relationship (it is important to note that the relationship itself is not diagnosed). It will also offer a set of exercises to maintain or strengthen trust.
The questions that the user must answer with total honesty are the following:
- I can collaborate well and solve practical problems with my partner.
- I feel that I can trust my partner.
- When my partner and I do not agree or we have a conflict, I will quickly assume it.
- How many times in the recent past have you thought that your relationship is not good?
- How often have you recently considered separating yourself from your partner?
- How close emotionally do you feel about your partner?
- In general, how satisfied is your relationship?
