The Valencia City Council has begun reduce the water level of the Albufera to facilitate the work of search for missing in the lake, into which boulevards and ravines flow, such as the Poyo, which flooded the Horta Sud region after the DANA on October 29. For this, has closed the floodgates and activated extraction pumpswhich can expose bodies of people who were swept away by the fury of the water, as well as tons of belongings, objects and vegetation.
As reported this Monday by the City Council of the capital, in whose area the Albufera lake is located and which is part of the natural park of the same name, the Group of Specialists in Underwater Activities (GEAS) of the Civil Guard has transferred to the service Municipality of Devesa-Albufera “urgent request” to reduce the level of the lake in order to facilitate the search for missing people, in which fishermen from the Palmar Brotherhood also collaborate.
The team of Civil Guard divers has requested that the level of the lagoon be lowered by means of water extraction pumps and that, at the same time, the gates of the golas be kept closed, an operation that is already underway. The Valencia Fire Department is also working on the search for missing persons.
As municipal sources have explained to 20 minutesthe floodgates to the sea were open from the beginning of the DANA by decision of the Drainage Board due to the sudden rise in the level of the lake as a result of the floods. Failure to do so ran the risk of even greater flooding in the area or even the breaking of the floodgates. This Monday they were closed at the request of the Civil Guard for search work and the pumping towards the sea to lower the level of the waters.
The City Council, in response to this request, in coordination with the GEAS and with the technical approval of the Department of the Environment, has proceeded since this morning to reduce the water levels of the lake to the ecological minimumwith the extraction pumps at full capacity in the Perellonet and Pujol golas.
Also in the sea and in the ravine
In addition to the lake, the search for fatalities as a result of DANA continues, 13 days after the arrival of this meteorological phenomenon, at sea, from the north of the province of Valencia to Dénia, in the province of Alicante; and in the Poyo ravine. This has been indicated by the general director of Forest Fire Prevention of the Generalitat, Rosa Tourisafter the Cecopi meeting this Monday. The search work in the Albufera is carried out “with bathymetry equipment, drones and diving equipment“, detailed the regional official.
