A new edition of the Covid-19/Fiocruz Observatory Bulletin confirms the trend towards an improvement in the occupation rates of intensive care beds (ICUs) in the country. The advance of vaccination, especially in the most vulnerable groups, would explain the situation. This Thursday, 1st, according to data from the press consortium, which includes the state, the country reached 100 million doses of applied vaccines – of the total, 26,580,585 completed the vaccination schedule, with two doses or a single dose (12.55% of the population).
In addition, casualty records have been declining for 12 consecutive days. The moving average is the lowest since March 8 and, compared to 14 days ago, the data showed a reduction of 24%, according to the consortium. This Thursday, 1,943 deaths were reported and the total reached 520,189. The Fiocruz study also indicated a slight drop in the number of cases (0.2%) and deaths (2.5%) per day, although transmission remains at very high levels – higher than those recorded in the same period last year.

Only three states have bed occupancy rates equal to or greater than 90%: Tocantins, Paraná and Santa Catarina. Another 15 (Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Pará, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Maranhão, Ceará, Piauí, Pernambuco, Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte and Alagoas) are in the alert zone intermediate, with occupancy rates ranging between 60% and 80%. Outside the alert zone are Rondônia, Acre, Amapá and Paraíba, with occupation of ICU beds of less than 60%.
Since April, the death curve has shown a slightly downward trajectory, unlike the pattern observed in the virus transmission rates, which have been on the rise since February – which means that the pandemic is still considered out of control.
According to the bulletin, the reduction in the number of deaths and more serious cases (admitted to ICUs) would be related to more advanced vaccination, especially in the most vulnerable parts of the population. “It is important to compare the behavior of ICU bed occupancy rates with the incidence and mortality indicators for covid-19 in the States and the Federal District and seek to understand any divergent movements”, points out the bulletin. “The dissonance observed between the increase in registrations of new cases and the decrease in mortality is explained by the advance of vaccination in the country. Today, vaccination coverage within risk groups, or priority groups, is broader compared to the rest of the country. population.”
