The US government has announced a project to build up to seven wind farms off the coast of the country as part of a plan to provide wind power to more than 10 million homes by 2030.
The US government “is charting an ambitious strategy as we move forward with plans (…) to tackle climate change, create well-paying jobs and accelerate the nation’s transition to a cleaner energy future,” said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland , during a wind energy conference in Boston.
In March, the government of President Joe Biden announced investments to stimulate wind farms as part of its agenda to combat climate change.
According to the White House, government plans would generate 30 gigawatts of wind energy by 2030, enough to power 10 million homes in the United States, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 78 million tons.
To do this, the Biden government plans to invest more than 12 billion dollars a year on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, creating tens of thousands of jobs.
Haaland said the government plans up to seven concessions for wind turbines in the Gulf of Maine, the Mid-Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the coasts of New York, the Carolinas, California and Oregon.
Only one marine wind farm is fully operational in the United States: Block Island Wind Farm, completed in 2016 in the state of Rhode Island and capable of producing 30 megawatts.
The current administration’s support for wind energy contrasts with the policy of former President Donald Trump, who at various times during his term ridiculed renewable energy sources, claiming they are expensive and inefficient.
