The chance of contracting Guillain-Barré syndrome rises from 3 to 5 times
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the US drug safety agency, has announced a new warning for the Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccine, explaining that it may carry the risk of a rare neurological condition known as Guillain syndrome. Barré, an immune system disorder that can cause muscle weakness and occasionally paralysis.
Health officials described the side effect as a “small possible risk” for those who received the injection: the risk is three to five times higher among those vaccinated with J&J than in the general population in the US. About 100 cases have been identified so far, mostly among men, many aged 50 and over. Most have recovered, but one death has also been recorded.
