A group of 25 congressmen, 16 of them Republicans and 9 Democrats, presented this Friday a bipartisan resolution celebrating 200 years of bilateral relations between the United States and Colombia, that are commemorated this year.
In the resolution, which still needs to be approved by the plenary of the House of Representativeshighlights key milestones in the history shared by both nations and highlights the importance of continuing to promote and strengthen these links with Colombia.

The text was promoted by the co-chairs of the “Caucus” or Legislative Support Committee for the country chaired by representatives Mario Díaz-Balart (Republican of Florida) and Albio Sires (Democrat of New Jersey).
“For two hundred years, the relationship between the United States and Colombia has become one of the most important partnerships in the world. This bipartisan resolution celebrates this strong alliance and highlights the ways the United States and Colombia continue to work together to combat narcoterrorism, strengthen democratic institutions, and promote security in our hemisphere. I will continue to work with my colleagues to promote and strengthen this crucial partnership,” said Díaz-Balart.
Sires, for his part, highlighted Colombia as “a true friend of the United States” and thanked Colombians for two centuries of shared work.
“I will always thank the Colombian people and the Colombian government for the work they have done in conjunction with the United States to advance democracy, security, and economic opportunity in this hemisphere. Today, as we celebrate 200 years of diplomatic relations, I am proud to join with my colleagues from both parties to recognize this essential alliance with Colombia and express our shared commitment to further strengthen this important relationship”, noted this legislator.
Sires, who heads the House subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, also published a joint statement with the president of the Committee on Foreign Relations, Gregory Meeks, in which both highlight the 200 years of bilateral relations.
In addition to Diaz-Balart and Sires, the resolution was supported by Congressmen Michael T. McCaul, Mark Green, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, María Elvira Salazar, Rubén Gallego, Dan Crenshaw, Filemon Vela, Mike D. Rogers, Henry Cuellar, Gary J. Palmer, Dina Titus, Tony González, Kathy Castor, Michael Waltz, Norma Torres, Carlos A. Giménez, Rick Crawford, Jerry L. Carl, Robert B. Aderholt, David G. Valadao, Barry Moore, Lisa McClain, Christopher H. Smith , and Charlie Christ.
