The quake knocked out power in Humboldt County for more than 64,000 homes.

A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude struck off the northern California coast early this morning, knocking out power to more than 64,000 homes in Humboldt County, which represents 65 percent of homes, according to the PowerOutrage incident registration page.

As reported by the United States Geological Institute (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the sea, twelve kilometers west of the town of Ferndale, with about 15,000 inhabitants, in Humboldt County, about 350 kilometers north of San Francisco.

So far no serious damage or injuries have been reported. The tremor was recorded at 02:34 hours (10:34 GMT), tIt had a depth of 16.1 kilometers and was followed by numerous aftershocks, one of which reached a magnitude of 4.6, according to the USGS.

The California Highway Patrol has received notices that the shaking has caused cracks in an access bridge to Ferndale, local media reported. No tsunami warning associated with the quake has been registered so far, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
