They were in places that felt safe – but few spaces in America are guaranteed to be safe. This weekend alone, more than a dozen people died and more than 70 were injured in at least 13 mass shootings across the United States. Some were at graduation parties, a nightclub, a popular entertainment district, or a shopping mall.
The bloodshed comes as the country has suffered a string of murders in the past month, including a Texas elementary school massacre; a deadly attack on an Oklahoma medical facility; a racist attack on a supermarket in New York; and an attack on a Taiwanese church service in California.

The US suffered at least 246 mass shootings in 2022 – far more than days of the year so far, according to the report. Gun Violence Archive . That’s the same number of mass shootings in 2021, in the same period.
The country is on track to match or surpass last year’s total, which is the worst on record, according to data compiled by the GVA.
In 2020, there were 161 mass shootings as of June 5; in 2019, that number was 154. The nonprofit defines a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.
Here’s where the mass shootings took place across the country over the weekend:
– In Socorro, Texas, five people were injured after a gunman opened fire on a crowd gathered for a high school graduation party, said Police Chief David Burton. All five of the injured are teenagers, including two who were in critical condition, he said.
– In Summerton, South Carolina, one person was killed and at least seven others were injured at a graduation party.
– In Philadelphia, at least two people were killed and 11 others were shot in a busy entertainment district. A third person who died may have been one of the shooters, police said.
– In Chattanooga, Tennessee, two people were killed and 14 were injured in or near a nightclub.
– In Phoenix, one person was killed and eight others were injured in a shopping mall. The murdered victim was a 14-year-old girl, according to police.
– In Mesa, Arizona, two people were killed and two others were injured.
– In Omaha, Nebraska, one person was killed and three others were injured
– In Chesterfield, Virginia, one person was killed and five others were injured.
– In Macon, Georgia, one person was killed and three others were injured.
– In Saginaw, Michigan, three people died and two were injured.
– In Grand Rapids, Michigan, one person was killed and three were injured.
– In Ecorse, Michigan, five people were injured.
– In Hempstead, New York, one person was killed and three were injured.
