The United States government will send a warship and fighter jets to support the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after a series of missile attacks by Yemeni rebels.
The announcement of the deployment of war equipment to “assist the UAE against the threat” came after a telephone conversation between US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and the Crown Prince of the Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, according to a statement released by the US Embassy. in Dubai.
The UAE is part of the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthi rebels – which are backed by Iran – and in January it suffered three missile attacks. The first of them killed three oil workers.
The second attack hit Al Dhafra air base, where US forces are, who used Patriot interceptors to shoot down the missiles.
The third attack took place on Monday, when the missiles were intercepted during Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to the United Arab Emirates.
The USS Cole, a guided missile destroyer, will work with the UAE Navy and will be based in the port of Abu Dhabi, according to the statement.
The US government will also deploy fifth-generation fighter jets, while continuing to “provide early warning information,” he added.
The rebel attacks opened a new front in Yemen’s seven-year war that has left hundreds of thousands dead, directly or indirectly, and millions displaced.
Washington, which supports the coalition in Yemen, wants the shipment of the equipment to act as “a clear signal that the US government supports the UAE as a strategic partner,” the statement said.
The rebel attacks have heightened tensions in the Gulf as international negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program run into difficulties, pushing up oil prices.
The Houthis began attacking the UAE after a series of defeats in Yemen by the Emirati-trained Giant Brigades militia.
Yemen’s civil war began in 2014 when the Houthis took the capital Sanaa, prompting the international coalition to intervene.
The conflict has left millions of people on the brink of starvation, according to the UN, which considers it the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
