Washington The Kovid-19 epidemic in South Asia has brought a far greater crisis on the economic front than challenges on the health sector. The top US think tank has done this assessment in its report.
The Hudson Institute think tank released a report titled ‘Nine Months of Kovid-19K: Impact on South Asia’ on Friday. Its co-authors are former Pakistan ambassadors in the US, Hussein Haqqani and Arpana Pandey. This report is a new version of the 30-page report ‘Crisis from Kolkata to Kabul: Kovid-19’s Impact on South Asia’ released in May 2020.
Haqqani said, “The economic consequences of Kovid-19 on South Asia are proving to be more than the health challenges in the region.” Different South Asian countries have dealt with the epidemic in different ways, but overall the economic cost is more than the health services outcomes. ”
Battle became difficult due to poverty
According to Haqqani, all these countries have a poor state of health infrastructure and a large number of people living below the poverty line, which makes the fight to deal with health crises difficult.
Haqqani said, “To ensure a safe return to normal life and restoration of economic activity, South Asian governments must focus more on the development of human capital.”
Army’s role increased in Pakistan
The report said that with the rapid growth of Kovid-19 in Pakistan, restrictions are growing on the media and political opponents, the economy is in crisis and the role of the army is increasing.
Debt crisis in Sri Lanka worsens
