A USS Albacore submarine, lost in World War II, has been found by the US Navy’s Naval History and Heritage Command (Nhhc).

The submarine disappeared on November 7, 1944 and now it was found off the Japanese coast of Hokkaido. The process was carried out using images provided by the University of Tokyo.
“As the final resting place for the sailors who gave their lives in defense of our nation, We sincerely thank and congratulate Dr. Ura and his team for their efforts to locate the Albacore wreckage,” said retired Navy Rear Admiral Samuel J. Cox, director of the NHHC before adding that “through their hard work and continued collaboration we were able to confirm the identity of the Albacore after being lost at sea for more than 70 years.” , according to the ABC media.
The newspaper reports that Tamaki Ura consulted the information on the submarine at the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records (Jacar) and with a remotely operated vehicle, Ura’s team collected data at the location indicated by the records.
Strong currents, marine growth, and poor visibility at the site made it difficult to obtain full images of the wreck. However, several key features of a late 1944 Gato-class submarine were identified in the video.
It was known that the registered documentation gave way to the identification of the object. Since she is a United States vessel, she is protected by the laws of that country.
The permitted activities are non-intrusive, that is, the documentation of sensors is carried out through remote controls and if any approach is considered intrusive, it must be coordinated and approved with the NHHC.
Built by the Electric Boat Company in Groton, the USS Albacore entered service on June 1, 1942. Before being lost in 1944, she conducted 11 war patrols and is credited with 10 sinkings of enemy ships and possibly another three not yet confirmed.
It is considered “one of the most successful submarines against enemy combatants during World War II,” according to the Nhhc, statements collected by ABC.
