What you missed on the night in NBA, NFL and NHL
Dusseldorf While most Europeans are asleep, the North American professional leagues are buzzing. What Happened That Night in American Football, Basketball, and Ice Hockey. Among other things today: Leon Draisaitl missed the All-Star final – the Wagner brothers suffered a clear defeat.
Ice hockey: Draisaitl fails with the Pacific team in the semifinals
The German ice hockey professional Leon Draisaitl missed the final at the NHL All-Star weekend with the selection of the Pacific Division. The team lost the semi-final against the Metropolitan Division, which later also won the final, 4-6. Draisaitl scored the goal to make it 2:3.
The Metropolitan team won the final of the Las Vegas show event 5-3 against the Central Division. Claude Giroux was named player of the tournament with three goals, two of them in the final.
The four teams in each division met in the All-Star Game. It was the sixth edition of the 3v3 format after the event was canceled last season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Basketball: Wagner brothers clearly lose to Memphis in the NBA
Despite a good performance, the Wagner brothers suffered another defeat in the North American professional basketball league NBA. Rookie Franz Wagner scored 15 points in the 115:135 against the Memphis Grizzlies, his older brother Moritz contributed nine points and five rebounds. Before that, the young Magic team had all won the last three home games.
The Florida franchise continues to have the worst record in the league with 12 wins and 42 losses. Recently, however, Orlando has improved significantly and won four of the last seven games. National player Franz Wagner, who has not scored in double digits three times in 36 games since the end of November, played a large part in this.
American Football: NFL responds to allegations of racism and wants to work for diversity
The NFL has responded to coach Brian Flores’ allegations of racism and announced improvements in the North American professional football league. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote to teams that the results of the diversity effort are “unacceptable” when it comes to coaches. Several US media reported on the letter on Saturday.
Goodell announced that the measures and guidelines will be reviewed and re-evaluated by external experts. “We see a need to better understand the experiences of the various groups in the NFL family so we can ensure everyone is given a fair opportunity and is treated with respect and dignity,” Goodell wrote.
This announcement comes days after former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores sued the NFL and three teams for racism. Flores’ lawyers have criticized Goodell’s statements.
“The statements made by the Commissioner today are a good step forward, but we believe it is more of a publicity stunt than a real commitment to change. For too long, the NFL has hid behind foundations designed to protect the rights of black players and coaches and law firms that are supposedly independent and impartial but are funded by the NFL. Meanwhile, systematic racism has taken root in the NFL offices,” criticize Doug Wigdor and John Eleftherakis.
They would like Goodell to get in touch with them so they could talk about “real change.”
