What you missed that night in NBA, NFL, and NHL
Dusseldorf While most Europeans are asleep, the North American professional leagues are busy. What happened during the night in American football, basketball and ice hockey. Today among other things: The NBA introduces stricter corona rules and Irving returns to the Nets.
Basketball: NBA tightens corona rules
The North American professional basketball league NBA has tightened its guidelines due to the increasing number of corona cases. Accordingly, from December 26th, all players and coaches have to be tested on match days for two weeks. This does not apply to actors who have already received a booster vaccination or who have recently recovered from an infection. The wearing of masks is also more strictly regulated: this is now mandatory during games on the bench, in the dressing room, on the training ground and when traveling.
So far, vaccinated players have not had to be tested during the season. At the start of the season, 97 percent of the players were vaccinated. But recently the corona cases increased, last Wednesday and Thursday alone, 22 players had to go to the NBA’s health protocol. This list includes players who have either tested positive for Covid-19 or have been classified as contact persons.
So far, two games with the participation of the Chicago Bulls had to be postponed. The Bulls had the first major corona outbreak this NBA season, affecting ten players. In the meantime, however, the Bulls have been allowed to resume training.
Basketball: Wagner shines in Orlando
Despite a brilliant performance, rookie Franz Wagner could not prevent Orlando Magic’s defeat in the North American professional basketball league against Miami Heat. The 20-year-old was Magic’s best thrower at 105: 115 in the Florida duel with 27 points and also contributed six rebounds and four assists.
His older brother Moritz was not used, who like four other teammates had to enter the Corona protocol. Orlando was also missing five injured players. In view of the tense personnel situation, coach Jamahl Mosley praised the morale of his team: “I love my team, I love the way it plays, the way it fights to the end.” From the second quarter, Mosley also had to do without Wendell Carter, who injured his knee.
National player Dennis Schröder was not used for the Boston Celtics. The record champions were defeated in their own hall by the Golden State Warriors with 107: 111, Schröder was sick. However, Corona should not have been the reason for its absence. Three days after his three-way record in the NBA, superstar Stephen Curry shone again with 30 points for the guests.
The Celtics occupy tenth place in the Eastern Conference after their 15th defeat in the 29th game of the season, Orlando is penultimate (5:25).
Basketball: Irving returns to the Nets
The Brooklyn Nets will use Kyrie Irving again. The NBA team from New York announced on Friday. It had done without its superstar in the first two months of the season, as Irving is one of the few NBA players who does not want to be vaccinated against the corona virus.
Irving will not be able to play in home games for the Nets, as an unvaccinated person this is not possible for Irving in the US state of New York. As things stand, Irving will not be allowed to accompany his team to games in Canada either.
Irving will be allowed to train on the team’s own training grounds. However, five negative corona tests in a row are necessary for this. It remains to be seen when Irving will appear for the Nets for the first time. As an unvaccinated player, Irving will also have to be tested daily.
The Brooklyn Nets are currently very weak: seven players, including superstar James Harden, are in the NBA’s health protocol. This list includes players who have infected themselves with the coronavirus or have had close contact with such a person.
Ice hockey: Nashville celebrates seventh win in a row
The Nashville Predators remain the team of the hour in the North American professional ice hockey league NHL. On Friday evening (local time) the Predators prevailed 3: 2 (1: 1, 0: 0, 1: 1) after extra time at the Chicago Blackhawks. After 58 seconds in extra time, Tanner Jeannot scored the decisive goal for the Predators. With the seventh success in a row, Nashville has the longest winning streak in the NHL.
In three of the other five encounters on Friday evening, the decision was only made after regular time: The Vegas Golden Knights sat down 3: 2 (1: 0, 0: 2, 1: 0) after penalty shootouts at the New York Rangers and were successful for the fourth time in a row. The Pittsburgh Penguins drove a 3: 2 (1: 0, 1: 1, 0: 1) home win after extra time over the Buffalo Sabers. So did the Arizona Coyotes, who got the upper hand 6: 5 (2: 3, 1: 0, 2: 2) against the Anaheim Ducks.
