WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The sanctions imposed on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine have nothing to do with a potential nuclear deal with Iran, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday, following Russia’s demand for written assurances. of Washington that its punitive measures will not undermine cooperation with Iran.
In an interview with the CBS program, Blinken said a possible nuclear deal with Iran is at hand, but warned that “some very challenging issues have not yet been resolved.”
“The sanctions that have been put in place against Russia have nothing to do with the Iran nuclear deal and the prospects of returning to that deal,” Blinken said. “These things are totally different and just not connected in any way. So I think this is irrelevant.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday that Western sanctions imposed over the Ukraine war had become an obstacle to the Iran nuclear deal, warning that Russian national interests would have to be taken into account.
Russia’s announcement, which could torpedo months of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington in Vienna, came shortly after Iran said it agreed with the UN nuclear watchdog to resolve outstanding issues that could help secure the nuclear pact.
