The United States stated this Thursday (15) that Russia is developing a new weapon capable of destroying satellites in space, but that it does not, at this time, represent an immediate threat to security.
The White House said US intelligence services have information that the new weapon is not yet operational. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the American government is analyzing the characteristics of this new weapon, which may have an emerging technology that is still unknown.
He confirmed that the US is currently consulting with its allies and partners on the matter. Kirby clarified that the weapon cannot be used to attack humans or cause physical destruction on Earth, but acknowledged that its potential for “disruption” is very great. The spokesperson did not provide further details about the weapon.
According to information from the agency Associated Press (AP), Kirby criticized Republican Representative Mike Turner, who called for the declassification of information about the Russian weapon, saying it was a “serious national threat”. He said the review and declassification process was already underway when the Republican released his statement.
Russia, in turn, downplayed the US accusations and attributed them to a maneuver to force Congress to approve financial aid for Ukraine.
