The United States announced on Wednesday (18) sanctions against 12 people related to Iran’s violent and coercive tactics, following the wave of social protests at home and abroad over Mahsa Amini, detained for allegedly wearing the Islamic veil incorrectly and killed while in police custody two years ago.
The new measures target members of the Revolutionary Guard, officials of the Iranian Prisons Organization and those responsible for lethal operations abroad.
The US took the measures in coordination with Australia and Canada, which are also implementing new sanctions this week against those responsible for human rights abuses in Iran, the State Department said in a statement.
Several of the individuals sanctioned on Wednesday, whose identities were not released, are responsible for human rights abuses, actions related to the deaths and violent repression of prisoners protesting their conditions, and the use of torture and sexual assault against prisoners, as well as the denial of medical care to political prisoners and the kidnapping of regime critics abroad.
“In the two years that have passed since the senseless murder of Mahsa Zhina Amini in the custody of Iran’s so-called Morality Police, the Iranian regime has continued to systematically violate the human rights of the Iranian people,” the statement said.
The arrest and death of the Iranian woman “for defying the regime’s mandatory hijab laws,” the statement added, sparked a national movement and a call: “Women, life, freedom.”
“The Iranian government has responded to this movement with brutal repression, including assassinations, torture, sexual violence, and other acts of repression. The United States remains committed to exposing and sanctioning Iranian officials responsible for human rights violations,” the State Department stressed.
