None of the proposals, however, have the minimum votes needed to advance in the US Senate.
In a 1st attempt to respond to the overthrow of the jurisprudence that allowed abortion in the US, the US House approved this Friday (15.Jul.2022) 2 bills that ensure access to the procedure across the country.
However, it is likely that the bills will not get the minimum number of votes to pass the US Senate because of Republican opposition. 60 would be needed.
The 1st approved project is the updated version of the Law for the Protection of Women’s Health which prohibits States from imposing restrictions on termination of pregnancy. The measure also gives healthcare professionals the right to provide the procedure and patients the right to have access to it. There were 219 votes in favor and 210 against.
The bill was created in 2021 and was approved by US deputies in September of the same year, but not passed on in the Senate in May 2022. At the time, all 50 Republican senators opposed the bill.
The Chamber also passed the proposal Ensuring Access to the Abortion Law which prohibits States from interfering with a woman’s right to travel to perform the procedure in another State. There were 223 congressmen in favor and 205 against.
With the overturning of the Roe v. Wade, each state sets its own rules on legal termination of pregnancy. Some, like California, Minnesota and New York, guarantee the right, but several have already mobilized to prohibit or strongly restrict access to the procedure.
according to Center for Reproductive Rights6 US states made abortion illegal after the decision was dropped. They are: Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Alabama. Others like Idaho, North Dakota and Wyoming are expected to ban soon.
Also after the Supreme Court decision, the demand for abortion-inducing drugs increased in the US. The information is from BBC. President Joe Biden signed an executive order on July 8 to facilitate access to services to terminate pregnancy, including access to abortion pills.
Biden’s order also cites family planning and contraception services, as well as the protection of doctors and women who travel for abortions.
