Washington, DC (AP) — Corn crop quality in the United States remained stable last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported Monday in its weekly crop monitoring report. The agency said 65 percent of the crop was in good or excellent condition last Sunday, unchanged from the previous week.
The report also showed that 92% of the crop had formed teeth, compared with 94% a year ago and 91% on average. The agency also said that 61% of the crop was mature, compared with 65% a year ago and 55% on average. The harvest was at 14%, compared with 13% a year ago and 11% on average.
For soybeans, the USDA said 64% of the crop was in good or excellent condition as of Sunday, steady from a week earlier. A year earlier, that share was 50%. According to the report, 65% of the crop had leaf drop, up from 68% a year earlier and 57% on a five-year average. The agency also said 13% of the crop had been harvested, up from 10% a year ago and 8% on average.
The USDA said 96% of the spring wheat crop had been harvested, up from 95% a year earlier and the five-year average.
For winter wheat, the agency said 25% of the crop had been planted, compared with 23% at the corresponding date last year and 24% on the five-year average. The USDA also said 4% of the crop had emerged, compared with 6% a year ago and 5% on the five-year average.
The report also showed that 37 percent of the cotton crop was in good or excellent condition, down 2 percentage points from the previous week. The agency also said that 63 percent of the crop had boll opening, compared with 62 percent at the corresponding date last year and 60 percent on the five-year average.
