MLBWith an annual salary of an average of 43.3 million dollars (more than 38 million euros), Max Scherzer will soon be able to call himself the highest paid baseball player ever. The 37-year-old pitcher exchanges the Los Angeles Dodgers for the New York Mets and will earn no less than 130 million dollars (more than 114 million euros) over the next three seasons.
Scherzer thus breaks the record of fellow pitcher Gerrit Cole, who receives an average annual salary of $ 36 million with the New York Yankees. Cole signed a contract in 2020 that will net him $324 million over nine years. The largest contract in the history of Major League Baseball (MLB) is still in the name of Mike Trout ($426.5 million for 12 years in 2019), but the LA Angels star earns less than Scherzer per year.
The record deal of the experienced free agent Scherzer does not stand alone. Because the collective labor agreement expires on Wednesday and club owners may put on the brakes, money has been thrown in the MLB in an unprecedented way in recent weeks. Barely a month after the American baseball season ended, the clubs signed new contracts worth nearly $2 billion.
Scherzer wasn’t the only player to make the big headlines. Texas Rangers went on to sign big earners like Corey Seager (Dodgers, $325 million over 10 years) and Marcus Semien (Blue Jays, $175 million over 7 years). Tampa Bay Rays extended the contract with Wander Franco, who will earn $182 million over the next 11 years.
