The operation was carried out in Deir Ezzor province in response to the August 15 drone assault on a US-occupied base.
The US military yesterday carried out airstrikes in areas of eastern Syria used by Iranian-backed militias in response to the August 15 drone attack on US forces from the Green Village base near the Iraqi border. Central Command spokesman Colonel Joe Buccino said in a note that the bombings, authorized the day before by President Joe Biden, were necessary to protect and defend US personnel.
Without identifying targets or offering casualty figures, the statement described the attacks as “proportionate and deliberate actions” aimed at limiting the chances of escalation and minimizing the risk of casualties. The Iranian government, as well as the Syrian state media, did not immediately acknowledge the operation in Deir Ezzor.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, opposed to the Bashar el-Asad regime, and the activist group Deir Ezzor 24, reported that the bombings took place in the Ayash camp, led by the Fatimiyoun group, made up of Shiite fighters from Afghanistan. According to the Observatory, at least six Syrian militants and foreign fighters were killed.
The August 15 drone strike, allegedly launched by Iranian-backed militias, targeted the Al-Tanf garrison, a compound run by US troops and US-backed Syrian opposition fighters in eastern Syria, whose troops entered the Arab country in 2015 to support allied forces in their fight against the Islamic State.
a strategic region
Deir Ezzor, meanwhile, is a strategic province that borders Iraq and contains oil fields. Iranian subsidiary militia groups and Syrian forces control the area and have been targeted by Israeli airstrikes in the past.
Yesterday’s shelling targeted infrastructure facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, including a cluster of bunkers used for ammunition storage and logistical support.
According to Buccino, the attack targeted 11 of the 13 bunkers, although in the end the attack was only carried out in 9 of them, ruling out 4 of the warehouses, because military intelligence information detected the presence of people in two of them and could not ensure that the other two were free of people.
Washington responds to EU draft to save nuclear deal
The United States has transferred its position to the EU on the final draft of the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, to reactivate the nuclear agreement with Tehran. “I can confirm that we have received the response from the US and have transmitted it to Iran,” confirmed yesterday the spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs of the Twenty-seven, Nabila Massrali. The Brussels proposal is the latest move to reach a consensus, after the pact signed in 2015 collapsed in 2018 due to the unilateral decision of former President Donald Trump to break it and reimpose sanctions on the regime.
