Boeing Co and its largest union said Sunday they had reached an agreement on a new contract that, if ratified, would avert a strike that had threatened to halt aircraft production by the end of next week.
Boeing said 33,000 workers represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers would receive 25 percent pay increases over the four-year contract, with average salaries rising 33 percent due to increases for accumulated experience. That is less than the 40 percent the union had demanded during negotiations.
But the U.S. planemaker agreed to a key union demand to build its next plane in Washington state. Workers are also to receive lump sum payments of $3,000 and a smaller share of health care costs, Boeing said.
The proposed contract is contingent on ratification by union members by late Thursday night Pacific time, a deadline previously given by the union for the company to make an offer before workers went on strike. Source:
