The United States government said on Monday it had information that Iran was preparing to deliver hundreds of drones to Russia for Moscow to use in its military offensive against Ukraine.
US government security adviser Jake Sullivan said they have no evidence that these devices have ever reached their destination, but that Iran is preparing such a shipment and will begin training Russian forces this month in the use of these armed drones. .
“This is just one example of how Russia leans on countries like Iran,” he said.
Sullivan stressed that the US will continue to do everything possible to ensure Ukraine’s defense and “help Ukrainians prove that Russia’s efforts to wipe Ukraine off the map cannot succeed.”
His revelation about Iranian drones comes on the eve of US President Joe Biden’s trip to Israel and Saudi Arabia, with the Iranian nuclear program at the top of his agenda.
Since before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the US has provided billions of dollars in security aid to Kiev. The most recent was last week, when Washington said it would hand over $400 million worth of weapons to Ukrainian forces, including precision munitions.
