Dhe US author E. Jean Carroll received $83.3 million (around 77 million euros) in compensation from Donald Trump after a defamation trial – now she wants to spend the money on “something Trump hates.” “If it hurts him that I spend money on certain things, then that is my intention,” Carroll said on ABC TV on Monday. Among other things, she wants to set up a fund for women who were sexually harassed by the former US president.
Carroll had complained that Trump had damaged her reputation when, as president, he denied in June 2019 that he had raped her in the mid-1990s. Trump accused Carroll of fabricating the encounter so that her memoir could sell better.
Carroll went on to say that she was afraid of the trial, but that immediately disappeared when the proceedings began. “It was as if he was nothing – like an emperor without clothes. I was so afraid beforehand and then he was there. He’s just something in a suit.”
Attacked in New York department store
In the 80-year-old author's second civil lawsuit against Trump, a jury awarded her $83.3 million in compensation on Friday. Trump's lawyers had announced that they wanted to appeal.
At the end of the first trial in May, a New York jury found it proven that Trump had attacked Carroll in a luxury New York department store in 1996, sexually abused him and later slandered him. The jury then awarded the writer five million dollars (around 4.65 million euros) in compensation. Trump has also appealed this decision.
The 77-year-old Trump is considered the Republicans' most promising candidate in the November presidential election. However, he currently has to deal with the courts in numerous different cases. A decision in a fraud trial in New York could be made as early as February, where he also faces a high fine.
