The US State Department said in a statement on Sunday that the US “has taken the next step” to “support innovative clean nuclear technology” in Europe. The announcement made today was a commitment of US$14 million for a study to provide the basis for sending a nuclear reactor to a power plant in Romania.
The 8-month effort is expected to cost US$28 million in total, with contributions also from the Romanian side, and will provide the European country with detailed data on the potential nuclear power plant project. US Special Envoy for Climate, John Kerry said that nuclear energy, including small modular reactors, as in this case, is a crucial instrument in the fight against climate change.
The US government has renewed declarations that it intends to help Europe advance towards energy independence, at a time of tensions and sanctions against Russia because of the war in Ukraine.
