The United States and Russia are withdrawing non-essential employees from their respective embassies in Kiev, due to the escalation of the crisis in Ukraine, while Germany and Belgium followed the decision of other countries and also recommended, this Saturday (12), the departure of their citizens. ASAP.
The US State Department “ordered the departure of Kiev embassy staff who do not respond to emergencies” in the face of “potential major Russian military action” at the border, the embassy said on Twitter.
“US citizens in Ukraine should be aware of the fact that the government will not be able to withdraw them” in the event of a Russian offensive, which could “begin at any time and without warning”, the same source added on its online page.
On Friday (11), the United States had already recommended its citizens to leave Ukraine as soon as possible, an appeal also made, in the sequence, by other countries, such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada and Japan.
Like the US, Russia has started to reduce its diplomatic presence in Ukraine, justifying this decision out of fear of “provocations” on the part of Kiev authorities, or a “third country”.
“Fearing possible provocations from the Kiev regime, or from third countries, we have, in fact, decided to optimize the personnel of Russian representations in Ukraine,” said the spokeswoman for Russian diplomacy in a statement released on Saturday, responding to journalists. on the reduction of its presence in the neighboring country.
Also today, Germany recommended that its citizens, whose presence is not “imperative” in Ukraine, to leave the country in a “short term”, as a military conflict is not ruled out, its Foreign Ministry said.
“Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have continued to intensify in recent days, due to the presence and mass movement of Russian military units near Ukrainian borders,” the ministry said.
“It is not excluded that there will be a military conflict”, he insisted.
Germany’s announcement followed a similar announcement by the Belgian government, which advised its citizens to leave Ukraine as well as to avoid travel to that country, the Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday.
“Citizens who are in Ukraine, whose presence is not absolutely necessary, are advised to leave the country,” the Belgian ministry said on its website, also recommending against traveling to Ukraine.
“If the situation worsens, a withdrawal from Ukraine is not guaranteed. Therefore, it is recommended to leave the country as long as possible”, advised the Belgian authorities, stating that the current situation is “extremely unpredictable”.
Other European Union (EU) countries, such as Estonia and Lithuania, also urged their compatriots to leave this former Soviet republic.
The EU institutions have recommended that non-essential staff in their office in Kiev leave Ukraine and work remotely from other locations.
