US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke on Saturday about the Ukraine war. Through a phone call, the government of the Asian country was asked by Washington to present a more critical stance against Russia.

The Chinese government has so far avoided expressing any condemnation of Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory and has opposed sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and other Western nations against Moscow.

The call between the two diplomats focused on the “premeditated” and “unjustified” war initiated by Russia, according to a statement signed by US State Department spokesman Ned Price.

China has traditionally defended the territorial sovereignty of nations, but maintained an ambiguous stance on the conflict in Ukraine, abstaining in two votes on condemning Russia at the United Nations, one in the Security Council and one in the General Assembly.
