Economist: US allies waive sanctions against Russia because of their interests
Some longtime US allies and satellites around the world are refusing to impose sanctions on Russia. On the unwillingness of US allies to support restrictive measures against Moscow writes British magazine The Economist.
It is noted that India turned out to be the most inconvenient country for the West, which constantly refrains from making decisions condemning the actions of the Russian side.
In Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, even America’s longtime allies and satellites are rejecting its pleas for sanctions against Russia, or even criticism of it.
Reasons for rejection
Many states refuse to criticize or restrictive measures against Moscow due to commercial interests, ideological beliefs, strategic ambitions or fear of losing a trading partner, the author of the material believes.
The West has become obsessed with the European conflict, which is not a real global problem, downplaying or ignoring conflicts and human rights violations in other parts of the world.
According to the publication, in the Middle East and Turkey, the position of Western countries is called hypocritical and self-serving, given the US war in Iraq in 2003 and the NATO bombing in Libya in 2011. According to the author, Europe’s “warm welcome” that was given to Ukrainian refugees “causes outrage compared to its attitude towards Syrian refugees.”

Partners of Russia
Russia and India are natural allies with established stable cooperation, but at the same time, New Delhi will not allow its relations with third countries to negatively affect the national interests of Washington, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said in an interview with the newspaper Hindustan Times.
I don’t think that Russia will influence the relationship between India and the US. The US knows that India and Russia are each other’s natural allies and that our relationship is very stable. India will also be very careful to ensure that the core national interests of the United States are not affected by our relationship with another country in the world.
At the same time, the minister did not answer a question about a possible refusal to support Russian defense contracts after the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine.
After Putin announced the start of a special operation in Ukraine on February 24, the authorities China did not condemn the actions of the Kremlin and did not call the operation an “invasion”. However, Xi Jinping called on Russia and Ukraine to sit down at the negotiating table to de-escalate the situation and said that China stands for respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
Recently, the situation in the east of Ukraine has changed dramatically and attracts increased attention of the international community.
Nevertheless, after the Western countries imposed sanctions on Russia, the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Zhao Lijian, spoke about the dangers of economic restrictions in resolving the crisis.

Possible US allies
Washington’s sanctions list is updated almost weekly. Countries such as Canada, Great Britain, EU countries and Japan have already joined the United States.
Earlier it became known about the intention of Armenia to join the sanctions against Russia. About a month ago, US Ambassador to Armenia Lynn Tracy held a meeting with Armenian banks, at which she called on them to refrain from helping Russia.
The United States appreciates Armenia’s commitment to international sanctions and maintains regular contacts with representatives of the Armenian banking sector on this issue.
Despite Lynn Tracy’s statement, on April 15 it became known that Armenia began paying for Russian gas in rubles.
