White House: China Invests in Strategic Weapons Amid Lack of START
John Kirby, the coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council, said that the United States believes China is investing in developing strategic weapons. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
According to a White House official, China is investing in strategic weapons development in the absence of an agreement similar to the Russian-American Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). “There is no agreement with China similar to the START, and we know that China continues to invest, particularly in these types of weapons,” Kirby explained during a briefing.
He noted that US President Joe Biden is working hard to manage relations with China in this area. Kirby expressed confidence that there are no reasons for conflict between the two countries today.
In June, Biden signed new guidelines on the conditions for Washington to use nuclear weapons. As the White House explained, increasing the arsenal and raising the level of combat readiness of the United States in the nuclear sphere will allow a return to dialogue on arms control with Russia and China.
