Uruguay did not get involved: it thrashed Venezuela and approaches the World Cup

Uruguay thrashed the eliminated team 4-1 Venezuela this Tuesday in Montevideo and, by dint of good football, climbed to fourth place in the South American qualifying round, the last one that gives direct access to the Qatar-2022 World Cup.

The party at Montevideo’s Centenario stadium was sparked off by Rodrigo Bentancur in the first minute of play and was followed by goals from Giorgian De Arrascaeta (23), Edinson Cavani (45+1) and Luis Suárez from a penalty (53). Josef Martínez scored the discount for Venezuela at 65.

La Celeste had its perfect night on its return to the Centenario stadium since last June, with high points that included the emergence of the young Facundo Pellistri, Bentancur, Federico Valverde and De Arrascaeta, in a comfortable victory for those led by Diego Alonso, who seek to qualify to his fourth consecutive World Cup.

Opposite, the Venezuelan team demonstrated again -now with José Pekerman in the technical direction- because it was the first eliminated from the region.

Uruguay adds 22 points and is in fourth position awaiting tonight’s duel between Ecuador (24) and Peru (20) in Lima in the match that closed the sixteenth and antepenultimate date of the regional pre-world championship.
