Urban planning The fate of Kaisaniemi’s old linden alley remained on the table – Trees are to be felled from the road of the new Baana

The old lime trees on the Kaisaniemenkannas are kept, but obviously in poor condition.

Kaisaniemenpuisto the new park plan was presented on the table at a meeting of the Helsinki City Environment Committee on Tuesday evening.

As part of the current plan, an old lime hut on the Kaisaniemenkannas would be demolished.

The Kaisaniemenkannas waterway between the zoo bay and the railway yard is part of Helsinki’s main pedestrian and cycling route. The plan is to build a bicycle Baana and a separate walkway for it.

Both Baana and the walkway are planned to be three and a half meters wide. They would be separated by a strip of trees and shrubs.

Of the old the preservation of lime trees has also been called for in an interaction memorandum published by the city in the summer. However, according to the city, anything other than straightening the shoreline and tipping down an old row of trees would be too expensive and difficult.

The city estimates the cost of the renovation of the western edge of Baana and Kaisaniemenpuisto at EUR 2.3 million. The renovations of the Kaisaniemenkannas are estimated to cost EUR 2.1 million.

According to the city’s estimates, the total cost of the renovations of Kaisaniemenpuisto, Varsapuistikko and Kaisaniemenlahti shore wall would be a total of EUR 36.6 million.

Thought the felling of lime trees from the path of the light traffic route has provoked opposition from residents. City wood expert Juha Raisio however, told HS in September that it would not call lime trees under threat of felling top trees.

“They have been set up on a quarry beach, and some of the land beneath them may have dissolved in the bay,” Raisio said.

According to him, the trees under the felling threat have dry branches and the growth of their shoots is short. He saw that the plan could be considered a good thing for urban trees, as it would provide an opportunity to set up a new tree.
