Urban Planning | Information from HS: The city is planning upheavals in Lauttasaari, the Länsiväylä may be turned into a street or even tunnelled

Helsinki According to HS data, the city is planning major changes to Länsiväylä. On Thursday, Helsinki is publishing four different future options, which contain some drastic proposals.

One possibility is that the city changes Länsiväylä into a street and lowers the speed limit to 50 kilometers per hour. Alternatives are also lowering the speed limit to 60 kilometers per hour or even moving the Länsiväylä into a tunnel.

Currently, the speed limit on Länsiväylä is 80 kilometers per hour. In the tunnel solution, the speed limit would remain as it is now.

Municipal politicians will ultimately decide whether changes will be made to Länsiväylä.

office holders the plans concern the section on the Helsinki side of Länsiväylä between Koivusaari, Lauttasaari and Salmisaari.

By studying alternatives, the city intends to find out what kind of changes would be possible in the area. So no decisions have been made yet.

The city is also investigating the possibility of residential construction around Länsiväylä. The city would like more apartments and amenities in the area.

A motorway in the middle of the city is a difficult solution for planners, the master plan manager of the city of Helsinki Pasi Rajala says.

“We need to do something for the Länsiväylä to reduce the noise and traffic effects in Lauttasaari.”

In different options, 1,000–17,000 new residents could be brought to the Länsiväylä area. Thousands of new jobs could also be created. The tunnel solution, which goes by the name Keskusta urban extension, would bring the most new apartments.

Hurry up no changes are planned for Länsiväylä.

A new harbor tunnel is also coming to Länsiväylä. According to Rajala, the implementation time of the tunnel has not been decided yet, but it will be implemented in any case before Länsiväylä is moved.

Rajala estimates that the implementation of the Länsiväylä changes could begin in the 2030s and 2040s.

“The goal is for us to get the general plan ready for decision during this council term. If there is an appeal, which is likely, the administrative court rounds will add two or three years.”

The preparation of the general formula alone takes several years.
