Urban planning Helsinki City Council approves town plan for Kamppi Kottarainen block – Enables additional construction in a historically important area

Some of the old buildings in the block, such as the wooden houses on Kalevankatu, are protected by a town plan.

Helsinki at its meeting on wednesday, the city council approved a change to the town plan of the camp’s Kottarainen block. The decision allows for additional construction in a historically significant area.

The buildings in the block have recently been used by Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The housing investment company Kojam, the former VVO, bought the land in 2017 from the City of Helsinki as part of a larger real estate transaction.

Starling block is located near Hietalahdentori.

There are six buildings in the block: Three wooden houses were built as apartments in the 1840s, and a red-brick former brewery building dates back to the late 19th century. The other two red brick buildings are by an architect Congratulations Tarjanteen designed former school buildings from 1925 and 1933.

The block will be converted for residential, commercial and business use. Buildings will be demolished from the courtyard of the block, and two residential apartment buildings will be built in their place.

The new floor area of the apartment is 11,340 square meters, and the floor area of the business premises is 6,225 square meters. The increase in population is about 250.

Some of the old buildings, such as the wooden houses on Kalevankatu, are protected by a town plan.

“Single-storey wooden houses are a few wooden houses that have remained in their original place in the center of Helsinki,” Deputy Mayor of the Urban Environment Anni Sinnemäki (Green) said at a council meeting.

In the Council there was also a critical debate about the suitability of the new construction for the historic environment.

“Wherever there is an open place in Helsinki, a dense and high place is being built there. You don’t always have to make it more box-like and ugly. Builders strive to maximize profits, not create beautiful architecture, ” Atte Kaleva (kok) said.
