Good news! The new BMW M2 is now really not long in coming. It just gets a six-cylinder and the drive where you are most likely to get tire smoke. It will be a compact machine with the sole purpose of making the corners of your mouth curl up. The bad news is that it will be the last BMW M of its kind.
“The BMW M2 with in-line six and rear-wheel drive will certainly be a puristic driving machine. We will see more and more electrification in other vehicles, in other forms, of course, from the 48-volt electrical system and plug-in hybrids to all-electric powertrains. In this light, the M2 will be the last M with a pure combustion engine drive and also without electrification space such as a 48-volt on-board network, yes,” Dutchman Frank van Meel, the boss of BMW M, tells. Not everything becomes a PHEV
The upcoming BMW M2 is therefore the last M model without electrification. That sounds a bit more dramatic than it is, by the way. A plug-in performance hybrid, such as the next batch of AMGs, is indeed something very different to drive than a car with a pure combustion engine. But such a 48-volt assistant, you hardly notice it. We’re going to tell you more strongly: the Audi RS 6 already has such a mild hybrid system, and you don’t hear anyone about it.
It is true that 48-volt systems continue but very little are combined with manual gearboxes. Fortunately, nothing is impossible, so perhaps we will get manual (mild) hybrids from BMW M in the future.
